Don’t Simply Join Fake Group

21 07 2008

A friend asked me before what one should act when she just join Facebook? My simple answer is that don’t simply add fake Facebook friend to your inner circle as well as join the fake group. Of course, there are many fake profiles that one can’t easily differentiated in Facebook, as I also wrote a post entitled, “Profiting from fake profiles” last month.

But for the fake group, I think I found the answer which I hope I won’t make a mistake. My simple conclusion for a Facebook group is: Good admin is good group. It’s a rare exception where good Facebook group don’t accompany good admin(s), or it’s even a rare exception where a Facebook group don’t have any admin.

Last week, I found that a Facebook group which have no admins. There is a statement appeared on the Group, i.e. There are no admins left in this group! Beware of this kind of groups, that’s because one good admin will not simply build a Facebook group and then leave the group, before she has properly introduced another Facebook member to take over the admin jobs.

Profiting from fake profiles

26 06 2008

Somebody has created ten Facebook fake profiles and is trying to make a profit from selling these fake profiles on eBay. These profiles are said to have a minimum 200 friends each. In January this year, CNet reported that 43% of Facebook messages are spam, now I wonder how many of the Facebook profiles are fake?

Update: I checked out the eBay link, it showed “This listing (260249755056) has been removed or is no longer available.

The False Promise of Security?

25 03 2008

According to AP, the private photographs of celebrity Paris Hilton and Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg have been exposed by a Vancouver, Canada computer technician namely Byron Ng. Ng was reported that he has started to look for the Facebook security weaknesses since last week and surely he found his way to access to some Facebook private photos that were supposedly be protected. It was a serious blow to Facebook as they just launched two new security features which include a “Friends of Friends” privacy option last week. It seemed like for some unscrupulous hackers, the tricks they’re manipulating could helped them in divulge personal information of all the Facebook users, including you and me. That is sad, and identified as a predictor that Facebook is still not at its best to protect the valuable users’ data.

Though Facebook spokeswoman Brandee Barker said Facebook was patched the bug after the security alert within an hour, this is neither the first time nor the last time a Facebook photo flaw can be found on the Web. A blog called laatedaa has published a post on the issue of Facebook private photos code in January. On that blog, a user can simply follow the instructions and enter the Web address, she is allowed to access to somebody’s Facebook private photo albums. (Update: A most latest comment showed that the code doesn’t work anymore)

Nonetheless, that such security flaw happen is alarming. We, as the Facebook users didn’t have much choice in preventing the revelation of data.
